Casinos increase profits at the expense of LA’s economic recovery Monday, Dec 26 2005

The column by the Associated Press’s Alan Sayre, with commentary by yours truly, is a predictor that gambling will further retard the state’s economic recovery. The dismal economic situation in New Orleans will be exacerbated by the illegal special breaks being given Harrah’s New Orleans casino to get it back into operation quicker.

Legalized gambling is giving LA’s faltering economy an triple-whammy. The suckers will lose more money (larger profits for the out-of-state companies) the casinos are providing fewer jobs for LA residents and more gambling addicts to taken care of by the LA taxpayers.

Gambling interests are fortunate that the LA leges are mathematically and economically challenged.

Rest in Peace Saturday, Dec 24 2005

Camille Gravel looked out for the little guy regardless of one’s political affiliation. I was one of them. May he rest in peace. See story here.

It’s o.k. — they’re all doing it! Thursday, Dec 22 2005

According to a story in the Daily Monopoly Rep. Arthur Morrell, D-New Orleans, says he’s innocent of the charges that he violated the state Heh, Heh, Heh, Ethics Laws. The basis for his innocent claim seems to be rooted in the legal theory that “everybody else is doing it.” It’s probably one of those Napoleonic Code thingys (As former Levee Board President Jim Huey would say.).

When we were kids, our mamas taught us the fact that “everybody else is doing it” was no defense. I learned pretty much the same thing in law school. However, neither my mama nor my law professors were familiar, at the time, with the LA Heh, Heh, Heh, Ethics Board.

In any case, if Morrell is correct and “everybody else is doing it” as he spills the beans defending himself, it should make for some good campaign material to use against the incumbents.
