Striving for a compromise Wednesday, Sep 27 2006

Yesterday, I was very concerned about Governor Blanco’s goal of striving to reach the Southern Average of teacher pay. Being average is not a very lofty goal and doesn’t strain one to strive for that.
But, this is LA. We’re last in everything that is good and first in everything that is bad. It was wrong to impose my personal standards of striving to be Above Average on our public officials.
Being at the Southern Average in some things is not all bad. Therefore, in the best interests of our state, I strove to find common ground with the governor. In that effort, I have arrived with a reasonable compromise on striving to reach our goals.
I support striving to bring teacher pay to the Southern Average, provided that simultaneously, the governor strives to bring state taxes and state spending down to the Southern Average.
This should show those naysayers who claim that I am uncompromising that I’m willing to strive to find a compromise for a good cause.
