Leges get auto-magic 20% pay raise Thursday, Oct 26 2006

Effective this month, the leges got an “auto-magic” pay raise via their per diem payments going from $115 to $138 a day. That’s a 20% pay raise! They gave themselves a 20% pay raise without even a public meeting or a vote.

These per diems are paid to each lege for every committee meeting attended between lege sessions. During the lege sessions, leges get paid 7 days a week WHETHER THEY MEET OR NOT for the length of the session.

For the upcoming 2007 Regular Session, the leges will get an extra $1,380.00. That amounts to an extra $690 per month. During the 2008 Regular Session, the leges will get an extra $1,955.00.

When’s the last time you got an “auto-magic” 20% pay raise. When were your taxes cut “auto-magically”? When was the last time you got a tax cut at all? Most likely the only way you have gotten a tax reduction recently was when your income went down.

The Blanco Administration needs to re-load quickly. There is yet another messenger to shoot. LA ranks 49th in longevity among the states. We rank behind Mississippi and Washington, D.C. in longevity, according to a report released by the Harvard School of Public Health.

There’s good news and there’s bad news in this report. Obviously, the bad news is that one will not live as long in LA as in 49 other states. The good news is that considering we rank so low in so many other category those of us who remain here will not have suffer those bad rankings as long.

Blanco ranks last on fiscal policy Tuesday, Oct 24 2006

When I got the note from fellow “Internet Kook”, Emily Metzgar reporting that Gov. Blanco had received an “F” from the Cato Institute for “Fiscal Policy” I wanted to say “DUH.”

Not only did our governor flunk, but her numerical score tied for last with the governor of Arizona. At least Blanco is consistent with our state. The other rankings of our state in comparison with the other states show we are last in everything that it is good and first in everything that is bad. See rankings here.

Currently, while the state has an “embarrassment of riches” (surpluses and revenue windfalls) Gov. Blanco’s approach is to put the state into further debt and to sell off assets. With that type of fiscal policy she should be happy that Cato doesn’t have a grade below “F”.
