About face - again! Wednesday, Mar 14 2007

going-in-circles.jpg

Tuesday we read a story where NOPD Superintendent is doing another about-face on dealing with major crime in New Orleans. Now the focus of the NOPD will only be on violent crime.

I thought that was already tried.

Even more difficult that keeping up with the crime rate in New Orleans is the number of bout-faces done by the brass at the NOPD as they continue their “trial and error” strategy or combating crime.

Dizzying

If one continually does about-faces, they will not only wind up back precisely at the place hey started, but they will soon become dizzy.

Common sense says that marching in place is preferable to constant about-faces. The esults are the same (remain in the same place), but at least the troops don’t get dizzy.

Community policing

Apparently, someone at the NOPD, we can only assume Chief Riley, decided that Community Policy” was, once again, the answer to N.O.’s crime problem. That is apparently hy Dr. Lee P. Brown is being paid several hundred thousand dollars to show Riley how o implement “Community Policing.”

Aside from the fact that the NOPD has implemented “Community Policing” in the past and reversed themselves, it seems that “Community Policing” is contradictory to the chief’s latest plan to focus all his manpower on violent crime.

Leadership needed

One thing that has become abundantly clear is that Chief Riley doesn’t have a clue what to do about the soaring crime rate in New Orleans except to come up with excuses why he can’t fix it.

At a minimum, new leadership in needed at the NOPD. The last thing we need is a bunch of dizzy police officers on the streets.

NOPD condoning vigilantism? Tuesday, Mar 13 2007

In yet another attempt to rationalize their inability to slow the violent crime rate and particularly murders in New Orleans, Sunday, a spokesman for the NOPD said it is “criminals killing criminals.”

Apparently, this statement is supposed to give the citizens some sense of comfort.

Does this mean that the NOPD classifies murders depending on who does the killing. It’s either a murder or its some other type of crime. Who cares who perpetrates a murder. That is, unless one believes that in America vigilantism is an appropriate way to address violent crime.

Is the NOPD somehow condoning vigilantism?

It’s time to quite trying to rationalize the irrational. The problem will never get resolved until the problem is addressed in a forthright manner. A violent death is a violent death!

John Breaux’s gambit Monday, Mar 12 2007

johnbreaux.jpg

According to a news report on Saturday, former U.S. Senator John Breaux has set a deadline for announcing his intentions about running for governor (of LA, not Maryland) this year.

Right after the rumors begin circulating about Breaux running for governor last month, Breaux said that he would not run if Governor Blanco was going to run. Governor Blanco continues to say that she is running.

So what’s the mystery? Obviously Breaux is not running. Right? Not necessarily.

Now, Breaux says that he will announce his intentions in 2 weeks. Why wait two weeks?

Assuming that Breaux is a man of his word, that means that Governor Blanco is rethinking her decision about running and will let Breaux know her decision within the next two weeks.

Apparently, Breaux knows that Blanco cannot win reelection. However, Breaux knows that if he runs and wants to be elected he cannot wait any longer for Blanco to make a decision.

Whatever, Breaux’s decision is in two weeks, it will have major implications for the upcoming governor’s race.
