Isn’t gross incompetence enough? Thursday, Apr 5 2007

Based on the latest report from the state-run Citizens Fund Insurance, it seems that even if there has been no wrong-doing, there is at best been gross incompetence by the top management of the agency and those which oversee the agency.
Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon continues to offer the excuse that “he does not think anyone committed fraud or theft at Citizens and that he has no evidence of impropriety.”
Citizens Chairman Chad Brown, who is also Donelon’s chief of staff at the insurance department, said the burden on Citizens staff is “overwhelming” due to the massive claims and the increasing customer base in the aftermath of the 2005 hurricanes and the accounting problems. This is April of 2007 when did Mr. Brown conclude that the staff was “overwhelmed” and why as chairman of the board he didn’t take action or at least bring it to the attention of the board?
This is an agency which was given $1 Billion of the taxpayers’ money and it can’t even balance its checkbook.
How can the state’s Insurance Department be expected clean up a mess for which it is largely responsible? Where’s the accountability?
Heads need to roll; starting at the top!
