Nagin’s foot-in-mouth disease Monday, Apr 23 2007

Perhaps New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin suffering from some rare illness similar to his Recovery Czar Dr. Ed Blakely that causes him to say stupid things. Or he is simply one of those “buffoons” to which Blakely referred.

Nagin’s latest gaff was in his efforts to make New Orleanians feel better about the filth in the city by telling them that Philadelphia is even dirtier. See story here.

Per usual, Nagin had to issue an apology to the mayor of Philadelphia.

What’s next? A visit to Baghdad where upon returning to New Orleans he will proclaim that the killings in New Orleans are less than those in Baghdad.

Mayor Nagin would do everyone in America a favor if he would stop traveling and simple roll up his sleeves and get busy fixing what’s wrong in New Orleans. It might help cure his foot-in-mouth disease.

Is anybody worried about us? Thursday, Apr 19 2007

“Let them eat cake”

Yesterday, in responding to the fact that it would take 6 months to access the financial records of state-run, property and casualty insurance company, Insurance Commish Jim Donelon said:

“I urge you to beat that timetable,” said Donelon, who is up for re-election this fall. “My concern is Wall Street, no other consideration.” (emphasis mine)

See story here.

If the Commish’s only concern is Wall Street, let me ease his fears so that he can sleep well at night.

If it turns out that all the money has been stolen or misappropriated (it will takes 6 to 8 weeks after they find the records to know) Wall Street will not be out a penny. Unless some folks on Wall Street own property in LA for which they purchased an insurance policy via Citizens, they won’t even experience a rate increase.

Perhaps the reason that Donelon’s only concern is Wall Street is that by the time we find out what has happened to the money at Citizens, his reelection will be over.

The only people who will suffer for the on-going debacle at Citizens should any money be lost, stolen or misappropriated will be the taxpayers of LA and those who have insurance policies underwritten by Citizens.

I only wish that Commish Donelon cared as much about us as he does Wall Street. If he had, this situation might not have occurred on his watch.

P.S. To the leges: Save about a Billion Dollars or so in case Citizens has to be bailed out — again.

Global Warming blamed for New Orleans devastation Tuesday, Apr 17 2007

According to a story in Monday’s Daily Monopoly New Orleans Recovery Czar Dr. Ed Blakely believes that the destruction of New Orleans was a “natural event” that was, apparently, the result of Global Warming.

Below are some excerpts from the story about a speech Blakely made to a group in Philadelphia Sunday:

Blakely also spoke at length about the effects of global warming on populated areas. The topic is a focus for the first time this year at the American Planning Association’s yearly meeting, which kicked off Sunday with a lecture by environmental activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

New Orleans, Blakely said, “is the first major American city that has been almost totally destroyed by the natural event. This is something we should anticipate happening elsewhere.”

Prior to this revelation, all the scientific studies by public and private groups concluded that the negligence and incompetence of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in designing the flood protection system was to blame for the flooding of 80% of the city following Hurricane Katrina.

As with most of Dr. Blakely’s procurements, the media has a difficult time in quoting him accurately or keeping his comments in context. Additionally, Dr. Blakely occasionally says things are off-based as a result of some undisclosed illness from which he suffers.

Therefore, until we hear Dr. Blakely’s explanation, I will reserve judgment.
