New Orleans has now recorded at least its 81st murder in the first 150 days of the year.

The latest murder was this morning in Algiers.

This was the 7th murder in 6 days We have been warned that violent crime escalates in the summer. Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer and right on cue, the murder rate has risen to over one per day.

Refresher course for the chief

Both Mayor Ray Nagin and NOPD Superintendent Warren Riley, in response to the latest spate of murders, have made references to the problem being violent youths listening to rap music. However, the more recent murders involve middle-age and older victims. The latest being a 60-year old cab driver. The perpetrators and motives for the murders, for the most part, are unknown.

Perhaps Chief Riley needs to take a refresher at the detective school. How does he know the perps are “youths” if they don’t know who committed the murders. Or perhaps the Mayor and Chief simply need to find some better excuses for the fact that neither is capable of doing his respective job of protecting the citizens.
