Why are they passing more taxes? Tuesday, May 22 2007

I’m sure there is an answer to my question; it’s just that I haven’t yet heard it.

Currently, without lifting the “spending cap” (LA Const. Article VII, Section 10(C)), the leges cannot spend all the money they already have. Yet, there are numerous examples (HBs 135, 159, 326, 401, 407, 451), some of which have already passed the House of Representatives, of more taxes being proposed.

Even if the proceeds of the taxes are dedicated, the expenditure of the revenues cannot occur without an increase in the “cap.” Of course, some of the tax proponents are Republicans so perhaps they will join with their Democrat colleagues in raising the “cap” to expend even more of our tax dollars.

I don’t think we need any more taxes, fees, “revenue enhancements” or whatever. I certainly don’t think we need any more of them if the proceeds can’t even be spent. It seems like a form of gluttony.

Like with State Senator Cleo Fields and Congressman “Dollar Bill” Jefferson, I anxiously await a “honorable” explanation about the money.

Breaux sends wrong message Monday, May 21 2007

breaux.jpg

There is a story in today’s Daily Monopoly about an interview with former U.S. Senator John Breaux. Breaux explains that he was serious about being our next governor. He also makes the following comment:

Breaux acknowledges “checking the box” to become a Maryland voter when he applied for a driver’s license, but said he never cast a ballot there and didn’t intend to. (emphasis mine)

Why did Breaux register in Maryland if he didn’t vote and didn’t intend to vote?

Breaux who served in elective office in our state for over 30 years and who wanted (seriously, he says) to serve in highest elective office in our state sets a poor example for citizens in LA, in Maryland and the U.S.

Too bad Breaux didn’t take as seriously his responsibility to vote as seriously as he desired to be our governor.
