Famous last words Monday, Jun 25 2007

That was then:

[State Insurance Commissioner Jim] Donelon has said he does not think anyone committed fraud or theft at Citizens and that he has no evidence of impropriety.
Times Picayune, April 4, 2007

This is now:

Note the story here. Apparently, Donelon has a high threshold for “impropriety.” As to the fraud or theft, Donelon may be on sound ground, at least as long as the financial records are unavailable. For certain, we won’t know one way or the other until after Donelon is safely reelected this fall for a full 4-year term.

A bit late

Finally, the last week of the session after working 31/2 days a week, the leges are finally getting around to looking into the problem of the Citizens Fund.

Wonder when they will get around to addressing the Road Home Program?

They have spent all the state funds that could have been used to address any financial problems with either program. Maybe the next governor and lege can get Congress to bail us out. Then perhaps not.

Perhaps, the next administration will have a Special Session in January, 2008 to increase our taxes. Hopefully, they will find a way to tax all the people who have left and are leaving the state. It will be very expensive on those that remain.

Did he really say that? Friday, Jun 22 2007

Here is an except from Thursday’s Daily Monopoly:

[New Orleans Police Deputy Chief John Bryson] also proclaimed that New Orleans “has been one of the safest cities in the world.”

He acknowledged it may not appear so, but said it will “once again” be the safest once the “drug situation” and “economic situation” come under control.

In other words, like Mayor Ray Nagin is fond of saying, the crime problem in New Orleans is NOT THE NOPD’S FAULT!

Speaking of safe cities in the world, NOPD Superintendent Warren Riley is somewhere in Norway attending a seminar.

Leges’ fiscal insanity Wednesday, Jun 20 2007

First the leges, via the Stelly Plan, take away the deductibility of charitable giving and contributions to religions.

Now, we see the religious organizations and charities who are, obviously, lacking due to the state’s fiscal policy coming to state for handouts. (See the various lists of Non-Slush Fund Slush Funds posted below.)

The leges in turn give the religious and charitable organizations OUR MONEY that was taken from US supposedly for various functions of state government.

The current scenario of having the state make the decision of OUR charitable and religious giving is simply wrong. It also shows that the best decisions of what to do with OUR MONEY is to leave it up to US.

Leave the money in OUR POCKETS. Clearly, we can make better decisions than those we elect to represent US.

Reduce OUR taxes and stop the fiscal insanity!
