In most cities violent crime gets the media attention. However, in New Orleans, violent crime and especially murders have become the norm. The city is averaging more than a murder every other day and is on pace to maintain its undesirable title of “Murder Capital of America.”

In truly what would only be considered as a “man-bites-dog” story today’s headline in the Daily Monopoly reads: Violence in N.O. takes a breather

The subtitle is: No one is killed in weekend incidents

The story goes on to say:

One person was shot and a handful of others stabbed — none fatally — in unrelated weekend incidents. For New Orleans police, the three-day period was one of the least violent weekends so far this year.

“We are pleased that this was a quiet and safe weekend for the city,” said police spokesman Sgt. Joe Narcisse. “The NOPD will continue its efforts to ensure we make the city safe.”

A shooting and a “handful” of stabbings is now what passes for “good news” in New Orleans. We are supposed to be comforted by the fact that due to poor aim and a poor choice of weapons nobody died. That’s a shame.

Hopefully, one day we can look forward to some really good news that all violent crime is finally under control and not simply be happy with the fact that one weekend in New Orleans nobody was murdered.
