Treen to run for Congressional seat? Tuesday, Oct 23 2007

dave-treen.jpg

Dave “Formerly Clean” Treen wants to be my Congressman. Yesterday, he announced that he will formerly announce in a few weeks that he will be a candidate for Bobby Jindal’s soon-to-be-vacant Congressional seat.

Treen’s current claim to fame is that he is leading the effort to get Edwin Edwards released from Federal prison early.

There was a referendum on EWE getting out early on Saturday. It was the sole issue of candidate for governor Mary Volentine Smith. She got 4/10ths of 1%.of the vote.

Will Treen be backed financially by the “Free-EWE” gang?

Treen seems to be running on his seniority. Apparently, the 79-year old Treen thinks seniority in Congress is based on one’s age.

Very sad.

New Orleans Murder Update Monday, Oct 15 2007

murders.gif

New Orleans has now recorded at least its 171st murder of the year.

That’s 9 more than in all of 2006.

The latest murder occurred this morning near Armstrong Park. It was the 6TH murder since Saturday morning. Bloody weekends like this are called “blips” by Mayor Ray Nagin. Unfortunately, these “blips” occur with great regularity.

Nagin rationalizes being the “Murder Capital of America” by saying it “helps to keep the New Orleans brand out there.” There must be a better way.

People living in New Orleans seem to have become accepting of the daily violent crime (not just murders) as a way of life as it is in Third World Countries.

While I hear occasional expressions of concern about crime, most of that concern is about whether tourists will stay away from the city. Since tourists are rarely affected by violent crime, the concern has not risen to the level of gaining the attention of the local public officials charged with keeping the citizens of New Orleans safe.

Shootings, stabbings, home invasions, armed robberies rarely warrant more than scant mention in the local media. None warrant the frequent breaking news bulletins we get from the local media that we get when somebody is shot on a college campus in another state. Yesterday, I got a breaking news bulletin about a candidate dropping out of a local political race, but nothing about the two murders.

Apparently, the media doesn’t want to scare the tourists.

More as it happens. And it will.

Economic development — LA style Tuesday, Oct 9 2007

jena6.jpg

When this was brought to my attention by a member of the Crack Mullet Research Team, thought it was a joke.

According to a story in Saturday’s Alexandria Town Talk, rallies to protest criminal charges from beatings at a high school and allegations racial discrimination are now considered economic development.

A few excerpts from the story:

According to an estimate provided by the Alexandria/Pineville Convention & Visitors Bureau, events directly related to the Jena [Six] rallies pumped $569,240 into the Alexandria economy.

The three events were attended by about 5,550, tourism officials estimate.

The economic impact was calculated by combining hotel rooms rented and money that was spent at other local businesses, said Shanna Worth, the spokeswoman for the Convention & Visitors Bureau.

What’s next? Bragging about the economic impact study of the dollars spent on funerals in New Orleans due to the high number of murders? The economic impact of bringing in additional FBI agents due to the high level of corruption in LA?

You can’t make this stuff up. Only in LA!
