New Orleans Murder Update & a question Friday, Nov 30 2007

New Orleans has now recorded at least its 203rd murder of the year.

The latest murder occurred Wednesday night in Algiers.

What has the mayor said about the latest murder? NOTHING.

Where’s Ray?

Rumor has it that Mayor Ray Nagin is in Jamaica on personal business. Nagin’s communication director says she doesn’t know where he is.

That begs the question: Who is currently in charge of New Orleans? Suppose an emergency arises while the mayor is in parts unknown; who makes the decision? Arnie Fielkow? Jackie Clarkson? Who?

If Arnie or Jackie is in charge, and the 2008 city budget is being approved tomorrow can they exercise the power of the mayor to sign the budget as approved by the Council? That would avoid his line-item veto authority.

More as it happens. And it will.

Nagin is a hypocrite Tuesday, Nov 27 2007

In yet another example of New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin saying one thing and doing another see the story here.

Nagin has the nerve to criticize those who didn’t vote in the October 20 Primary and yet he didn’t vote either. Nor did he vote in two other recent citywide elections.

Nagin even endorsed a candidate for governor and other offices in the October Primary, but failed to vote for those he endorsed.

As with many of the other problems in New Orleans it’s time to look into the mirror Mayor. Hypocrisy is ugly.

Kudos to Gordon Russell for calling the Mayor out.

crime-watch.jpg

New Orleans has now recorded at least its 202nd murder of the year.

The latest murders occurred Saturday night in the 9th Ward and Algiers, respectively.

The two murders were committed in a period of 1 hour. An hour earlier there were two other shootings, but due to poor aim, the victims are alive.

Compare

By comparison, New York City, with a population of over 8.3 million, as of last Sunday, had 412 murders.

NYC has a murder rate of 4.96 per 100,000 population, while the New Orleans rate, assuming a population of 300,000 has a murder rate of 67.3 per 100,000 population.

More as it happens. And it will.
