UPDATE: It’s now official Wednesday, Nov 7 2007

As required by law, Governor Blanco has just officially called the Special Election to fill the vacancy in the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s office. The Primary will be October 4, 2008 and the run-0ff, if needed, will be on November 4, 2008. See the proclamation here.

Orleans D.A. election not yet called Wednesday, Nov 7 2007

Despite an Associated Press story being circulated in New Orleans Monday, Governor Blanco has NOT called a special election to fill the unexpired term of former Orleans Parish District Attorney Eddie Jordan.

The report cites a spokesman for the Secretary of State’s Office.

The problem is that the law requires the governor, not the secretary of state to call the election. See law here.

The governor has 10 days from last Friday to call the election. As I read the law, the election could be held as early as September, 2008.

According to the governor’s press secretary, the governor has not yet called the election. One would have thought that the Secretary of State’s Office would have known that.
