Do-it-yourself tax rebates Monday, Apr 21 2008

In the past week, the amount of our tax dollars being requested by our leges for non-governmental organizations (”NGO”) (i.e. private groups) has grown significantly. As of today, the total is over $20.2 Million.

To see the latest additions go here. The organizations listed in red have been added in the last week.

Do-it-yourself rebates

Despite having an additional $1 BILLION in recurring state revenue in the current fiscal year, it doesn’t appear that our leges are even seriously considering provide us with any tax relief. Nor do they have seem to any plans to address our growing cost-of-living, i.e., insurance, healthcare, utilities, groceries, gasoline, etc.

Therefore, we must all take it upon ourselves to get back some of the $1 BILLION which we overpaid state government.

Here’s a tried and true method by which various individuals in LA having been getting our tax dollars for years:

1. Establish your own non-profit, non-governmental, entity.

2. Calculate how much money you need to make ends meet this year. (Don’t forget to include any legalor accounting fees incurred as a result of setting up your entity.)

3. Ask your lege to provide the funding for your NGO.

4. After June 30, contact the State Treasurer and asked him to send you your check.

Finally, please come up with a creative name for your entity. My entity is: “Citizens for Aggressive Self Help” (”CASH”).

Go for it!

Hiring Freeze thawed-out Friday, Apr 18 2008

puddle-of-water.jpg
Governor Bobby Jindal’s much ballyhooed “hiring freeze” has turned out to be more like one of those cool fronts we experience in LA in Mid-July.

According to a news report, Jindal has filled 4,100 jobs since he instituted the “freeze” in Mid-January. Of the requests for hires, despite the “freeze,” Jindal’s staff approved 72.5% of them.

There’s little surprise why state and local government are the biggest creators of jobs in LA’s economy.

In his Executive Order instituting it, the goal of the “freeze” was to save $25 Million for the remainder of the current fiscal year.

As of the most recent payroll information, $300,000 has been saved in the first 3 months.

At this rate the taxpayers can expect a whopping $600,000 savings for the fiscal year. If so, that will be 2.4% of Jindal’s goal.

For my explanation of January 30 of the “freeze” go here.

Oh well, it got some good headlines and some positive publicity for Jindal. That’s obviously the real goal.

We can only hope that Governor Jindal does better at reaching his other goals; otherwise we will remain frozen in last place when compared to the rest of the states.

LA’s super governor Wednesday, Apr 16 2008

Why is this man smiling?

It had long been a concern that electing Bobby Jindal as governor would mean that he would merely be a surrogate for his mentor, former governor, Mike “Big Daddy” Foster.

For a short while, though Big Daddy was visible in the “background,” it appeared that Jindal might be his own man.

Then Jindal fired the state’s highway safety champion, Colonel Jim Champagne. Champagne’s offense was doing his job and opposing Big Daddy’s efforts to repeal the mandatory motorcycle helmet law.

Initially, I thought the firing of Champagne and replacing him with Big Daddy’s former bodyguard, was just an isolated incident.

Big Daddy picks head of Guard

Monday “Watchcat” Robert Scott, in a story ( here), showed that this was not
an isolated incident.

Big Daddy has now selected the head of the LA National Guard. This, despite the recommendations of five retired military generals who had been asked by Jindal for a recommendation to head the organization. ( Report here.)

Character assassination

It didn’t stop there. With presumably Jindal’s approval, his staff set about “shooting the messengers.” Their offense was failing to recommend the person to head the LA National Guard favored by Big Daddy.

Jindal’s staff trashed the generals’ reputations as being incompetent for failing to provide information that they had not been requested to provide. ( Response to report here.)

At a minimum, Jindal owes the generals an apology. I’m not holding my breath. That’s not Big Daddy’s style.

Super Governor

In LA we not only have a governor, but we also have a “Super Governor” — Big Daddy.

Yes, he’s back and he’s in charge.
