Play by the rules and get screwed Friday, Feb 20 2009

Bobby Jindal and some of his lege lapdogs are proposing another “tax amnesty” program for people who don’t pay their LA taxes.

This will be the 5th such program in the last 24 years.

In other words, those of us who paid our taxes and paid them on time are getting screwed. The tax evaders have been allowed to keep and invest their money compliments of the state.

Why not just amend all the tax laws to allow us to pay them only once every 5 years. That way we keep more money in our pockets longer that we could use for our businesses and to support our families. That would certainly help the private sector economy.

A better plan

Taxes only work if there is a penalty for not paying them. In LA we reward people for not paying their taxes.

A better plan would be to start enforcing the existing tax laws. If they aren’t enforceable, then repeal them. Stop penalizing the honest people!

I’m tired of playing by the rules and getting screwed.

Ethics du jour Thursday, Feb 19 2009

Bobby Jindal’s new ethics reform package is turning from the “gold standard” into ad hoc ethics.

The story in Tuesday’s Baton Rouge paper makes the case.  (Story here.)

The attitude of our leges is, if the Ethics Board actually enforces any of the stuff they passed at Bobby Jindal’s request, the leges will simply change the law to make legal what the leges are doing illegally.

Instead of a government of laws, in LA we have a government of men (and women).

Perhaps a better description for LA’s version of ethics law rather than the “gold standard” is ethics du jour.

Who’s Bobby kidding Wednesday, Feb 18 2009

Bobby Jindal is telling the media that he might not take all the money allocated to Louisiana by the Federal bailout legislation.

Bobby says he will have to look at the “strings attached.”  It’s conservative-sounding rhetoric, but meaningless.

Who’s he kidding

Bobby knows the state will get all the money regardless of what he does. Or does he?

The following provision in the bailout legislation gives the final say to the leges:

SEC. 1607. (a) CERTIFICATION BY GOVERNOR Not later than 45 days after the date of enactment of this Act, for funds provided to any State or agency thereof, the Governor of the State shall certify that: 1) the State request and use funds provided by this Act , and; 2) funds be used to create jobs and promote economic growth.

(b) ACCEPTANCE BY STATE LEGISLATURE If funds provided to any State in any division of this Act are not accepted for use by the Governor, then acceptance by the State legislature, by means of the adoption of a concurrent resolution, shall be sufficient to provide funding to such State.

Is this another case of Bobby’s ignorance or merely another attempt to fool the people?
