On Tuesday ( Story here.), the State Streamlining Commission approved a recommendation to the governor and leges that they reduce expenditure in next fiscal year’s budget by 2% or $124 Million.

On Monday, Commissioner of Administration Angele Davis said that the state would have a revenue shortfall of $1Billion for next fiscal year. ( Story here.)

The state constitution prohibits spending more state revenues than the state is estimated to receive.

In other words, the Streamlining Commission is recommending that the governor and the leges not spend $124 Million of the $1 Billion it will not have.

Absolutely genius!

LA heading in wrong direction Thursday, Nov 5 2009

wrong-way

Under the guidance of The Rhodes Scholar and his ethically-challenged head of economic development, Stephen Moret, our state’s business climate is going in the wrong direction.  It has dropped 3 notches.  In 2008, Louisiana ranked 22nd and this year it ranks 25th.   (See report here.)

Louisiana even ranks below Mississippi.

Perhaps the folks who rank the states didn’t get a copy of The Rhodes Scholar’s new Heh, Heh, Heh ethics law.

Time for The Rhodes Scholar to stop campaigning for himself and start making our state more business-friendly.

Healthcare 2, Earmarks 8 Wednesday, Nov 4 2009

earmarks

The State Streamlining Commission is looking for ways to trim state spending.

State Treasurer John Kennedy suggested eliminating funding “earmarks” for NGOs (private, non-governmental entities) as a way to help plug the state’s projected $1 Billion budget shortfall.    The largest portion of the shortfall is for healthcare for the poor, elderly and children of our state.

Tuesday, Kennedy was voted down 2 to 8.

Apparently 8 of the 10 members of the commission believe that spending money on pork-barrel projects for things such as the Purple Circle Social Club is more important than healthcare for the poor, elderly and children.

If one gets sick perhaps a member of the Purple Circle Social Club will take care of you.
