LATEST UPDATE: Driver’s license tax repeal Tuesday, May 25 2010

update

On Monday morning, Sen. Joe McPherson, D-Woodworth, presented his SB 407 to the House Ways and Means Committee.  SB 407 would repeal Bobby Jindal’s clandestine, illegal, tax on our driver’s licenses and would refund the money to those who already paid the tax.

McPherson made an excellent presentation in favor of his bill on behalf of the taxpayers of Louisiana.  In fact, it was as good a presentation in a lege committee as I have ever witnessed.

My judgment is not based on the substance of the legislation, but based on the well-researched detailed information and chronology presented by McPherson of the history of this sneaky tax.

What they did

Bobby Jindal asked the committee not to hear the bill today.  Jindal opposed the bill in committee. Jindal is unalterably opposed to the repeal of the tax.

Thanks to your contacting the Ways and Means Committee members and in spite of Jindal’s opposition, the committee members ultimately voted to send SB 407 to the House Floor without opposition.

What we need to do

If you support SB 407, please contact your lege and tell them to bring this legislation to a vote on the House Floor quickly and to vote FOR SB 407.

If we are successful in passing this legislation on the House Floor without any amendments the bill goes next to Bobby Jindal for his signature or veto.

Unfortunately, it will take tremendous pressure on our “anti-tax” governor to keep him from vetoing this tax repeal.

WE NEED SB 407 PASSED AND SENT TO JINDAL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO THAT THE LEGES CAN OVERRIDE HIS VETO WHILE THEY ARE STILL IN SESSION.

Jindal breaks another promise Monday, May 24 2010

Bobby Jindal - Just another politician

When the “Roads Scholar” was running for governor in 2007 he made this promise:

Require ALL non-governmental entities seeking state grants to publicly file on-line specific reports detailing how their organization is structured, any relationships to elected officials or their families, and how state money would be used. Any group asking the state government for taxpayer dollars must fully explain their organization and detail their spending intentions.

That was then.

On Wednesday, “The Scholar” signed into law HB 997 as Act 10 of the 2010 Regular Session.

HB 997 exempts certain non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from the disclosure requirements he promised.

This is just the beginning of watering-down of the disclosure requirements for NGOs.   We will not know which leges or other public officials are affiliated with or benefiting from the expenditure of our tax dollars.

Previously, these NGOs were not subject to any public scrutiny.   The Open Meetings and Public Records Laws don’t apply to them.    Now there is zero disclosure for these private entities who receive and spend taxpayer dollars.

The campaign promise above is just another example of Bobby Jindal saying one thing to get elected and once elected doing something different.

UPDATE: Driver’s license tax repeal Friday, May 21 2010

update

SB 407 by Sen. Joe McPherson which repeals Bobby Jindal’s tax on our driver’s licenses has, as expected, been sent to the House Ways and Means Committee to die.

SB 407 has been placed on the agenda for Ways and Means Committee meeting on Monday, May 24 at 10:00 AM.

This committee is controlled by Jindal who wants to keep the tax on us.   So, the bill may or may not be heard.

To see the members of the committee go here .    To contact the members via email, click on their name and then scroll down to contact link and click there.

Keep the message simple:

1.  Let them know that it is you to whom they are answerable, not Jindal.

2.  Tell them to hear the legislation on Monday and to vote FOR SB 407.

Thanks for your help in trying to return control of our state to its rightful owners — the people.
