Emergency cash! Thursday, Dec 29 2011

Bodi’s stash

“Watchcat” (a complimentary title) Jeremy Alford reports on how much money our over-worked and underpaid (according to them) leges make. (See piece here.)

Rep. Bodi White’s rationalization of why he is the 3rd highest paid member of the House of Representatives jumped out at me.

White explained that he serves as chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. When the Unified Command Center hops to life, White said he has to be there. So, when you take into consideration recent hurricanes, river flooding and the BP oil spill, the days and miles begin to add up quickly, he argued. (Emphasis mine.)

In researching White’s duties as chairman of the committee in the House Rules and State Statutes, I found nothing. I mean nothing; no duties and no responsibilities.

White’s rationalization begs some questions:

– Who or what requires White to be at the GOHEP Headquarters during an emergency and what does he do while there?

– Can any lege while in Baton Rouge simple go to the GOHSEP Headquarters during an emergency and pocket a per diem payment and mileage reimbursement?

White’s higher lege pay seems less like the result of his lege duties and more like a run at the trough by a guy who claims he wants to reduce lege spending.

Kudos to Jeremy for exposing this waste of OUR money.

Tyler Bridges receiving an award in New York City

My friend, award-winning reporter, Tyler Bridges (Former investigative reporter for the Times Picayune and Miami Herald.) just published a piece about Buddy Roemer’s campaign for the Republican Presidential Nomination in New Hampshire. See article here.

Tyler pulls no punches about Roemer’s quixotic effort.

Nobody in Louisiana seems to care. Perhaps we know Buddy too well.

Turnaround or spin? Thursday, Dec 8 2011

The Jindal turnaround

LA has just been ranked as the 9th Worst Governed State. Unfortunately, we are not even ahead of Mississippi. See ranking here.

At the same time, Team Jindal is sending a piece out to people around the country entitled “Louisiana Turnaround - The Untold Story.” See document here.

For more of the “Untold Story” see the LA Misery Index.

There is a big difference between a turnaround and merely spinning. You be the judge.
